PHP: Partial Hospitalization Program
- A Partial Hospitalization Program is good for individuals leaving residential treatment who understand that while they have more work to do in recovery, a 24-hour setting is no longer necessary. Also, a PHP program might be a needed resource after a relapse of symptoms. Though programs vary, PHP is generally 6 hours a day, 5 days a week.
- At the PHP level, individuals develop skills that improve their mood and ability to function in hopes of allowing them to better cope with life circumstances.
- To achieve this mission, the PHP utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approaches (including dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) skills) for a wide range of conditions such as mood and anxiety disorders, depression, personality disorders, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders. BHP is useful as a step-down transition from acute inpatient care or as an alternative to inpatient treatment.
- Our behavioral therapy approach provides comprehensive, skills-based treatment aimed at stabilizing patients, improving functioning, and preparing for return to outpatient treatment. PHP’s main treatment components include group and individual therapy, case management and aftercare planning, medication consultation and treatment, and occupational therapy and vocational counseling consultations as needed.
- On a typical day, patients have the opportunity to attend different skills groups. A sample schedule often starts with progress monitoring followed by morning and afternoon groups, with a wrap-up group at the end of each day. Patients also can individually meet with one of their treatment team members. PHP’s therapy model emphasizes patient education as well as core and life skills. Examples of core skills include:
- Self-assessment
- Behavioral activation
- Cognitive restructuring
- Mindfulness
- Distress tolerance
- Emotion regulation
- Interpersonal effectiveness
- In addition to these skills, groups and individual sessions from specialty areas are added to supplement them as part of individual treatment plans. The program provides treatment targeting specific disorders including:
- Major depressive disorder
- Anxiety disorders
- Borderline personality disorder
- Bipolar disorder
- Thought disorders
IOP: Intensive Outpatient Counseling Services
- In an Intensive Outpatient Program, therapy sessions are typically 3 hours a day, 3 days per week. While IOP treatment can involve one on one counseling, there is a focus on group therapy. These sessions aim to help patients develop relapse prevention skills, as well as learn techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational enhancement therapy or dialectical behavior therapy, depending on each person’s needs. The lengths of IOP programs differ from person to person as they start to manage a successful recovery.
- The purpose of intensive outpatient services is to provide essential educational and treatment components while allowing patients to apply their newly acquired skills within their own environments and without an inpatient residential stay. Generally, treatment services are delivered during the day, before or after work or school, in the evening, or on weekends.
- IOPs provide comprehensive assessments and treatment plans that are specific to the individual’s needs. These plans, which are developed in consultation with patient, include problem statements and goals to achieve change..
